Placencia, Belize

The last days of our trip were spent in relaxed Placencia on the southern end of Belize. With easier access to the mainland, Placencia is only a tad more lively than Caye Caulker, but when you arrive via Hokey Pokey Water Taxi like we did, your mind prepares for a slower pace of life.

Riding the chicken bus for four hours; not our most pleasant journey

Placencia’s famed “Sidewalk” connects the whole town

Local artists setup tables all along the Sidewalk, such as these wood carvings

Fresh fruit smoothies from the Shak, at the end of the Sidewalk

Gelatto display at Tutti Frutti – opened by an Italian expat… yum!

We spent a day at the Silk Cayes for more diving

Our surface interval and lunch was spent on this little sand island

Tubular yellow sponges sprouting out of the coral

Tiny blennies hanging out on the sponge

Lionfish are an invasive species that have overrun the reef; divemasters will actively spear & kill them (see video below)

  1. Even more cool! Scuba diving! I’ve always wanted to try scuba.

Feel a little bad for those lionfish though. They’re pretty, but if they are invasive, then they deserve to die before they wipe out other species.

  2. Looks like a very relaxing time! Be sure to post about your cruise to Europe! Have fun and beware of pickpockets! :P No, but seriously. Be careful, hahahaha =)
